What to Know About Your First Dental Checkup After a Hiatus
January 4, 2021
The ADA recommends visiting your dentist at least twice every year. But for many, different issues arise and keep them from getting regular exams and cleanings. Whether your work schedule is too busy, the costs don’t fit into your budget or visiting the dentist gives you anxiety, the good thing is that you’re ready to get your oral health back on track. Dentistry is always changing, so being nervous about your first appointment is completely understandable. But try not to worry too much. Here is what you can expect during your first dental checkup in Idaho Falls after a hiatus.
Advanced Technology and Treatments
Dentistry is always advancing. Whether you’ve been away for 1 year or 10, you can rest assured that you will be introduced to new dental technology or techniques. For example, if anxiety is what has kept you from seeing your dentist, sedation dentistry can make your appointment much more relaxed and successful.
A Thorough Visit
Whether this is your first visit at this particular practice, or it’s been years since your last appointment, getting to know a new dentist or getting reacquainted with them can take some time.
- During your oral exam, your dentist will inspect your gums, tongue, lips, and cheeks. They will also check your bite and look for cavities, dental infections and any jaw issues you may have.
- You will need new X-rays to give your dentist a clear view of any problems that might be hiding under your gums. They will look for cysts, tumors, abscesses and any decay that may not be visible to the naked eye.
- Once the exam and X-ray are done, your dentist will clean your teeth. Depending on your dental care routine and the time you’ve spent away from the dentist, you will likely have a fair amount of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) buildup that will need to be removed from both your teeth and below your gum line.
Deciding Your Treatment Plan
At the end of your appointment, your dentist will take time to speak to you about any issues they’ve found, their recommended treatments and where to start. They will also discuss your current dental hygiene routine and what you can do at home to improve it. You will also have time to ask questions and get clarification on anything you’re not sure about or any cosmetic dental treatments you’d like to have in the future.
The hardest part about being away from the dental chair is making the decision to go back. Your dentist is not there to judge you; they want to help you achieve the bright, healthy smile you’ve always wanted. It’s never too late to improve your oral health, and your dentist in Idaho Falls is happy to help.
